Nancy is the Project Manager at the Family Online Safety Institute.
A big part of our job at A Platform for Good is finding stories about the many ways people are using technology to “connect, share and do good.” As a result, we spend much of our day surrounded by images, videos and stories about teens who are using technology to help others; teachers who are using technology to expand their classroom walls; and parents who are using technology to enhance their lives. Luckily, our job is made easier because good news abounds!
Our audience continues to grow – suggesting to me that there is a yearning for this message; a real desire for people to read stories that reflect their own experiences online. Yes, there are risks with technology, but for most, our devices make our lives easier, more fun and more connected to one another.
Today, in conjunction with Safer Internet Day, we are launching a Pledge for Good which will help us highlight all the good being done online and, we hope, will encourage more positivity, kindness and acts of good.
Here is how it works. On our website or our Facebook page, you will have the opportunity to make the following very simple, affirmative pledge: “I will use my power for good.” You can even take it one step further by pledging a specific action. Need ideas or inspiration? The pledge includes a great list of ways others are using their power for good (such as complimenting a friend online or becoming a virtual volunteer). When you take the pledge, you will have the option to post the pledge on your Facebook wall and tag family and friends to encourage them to take part.
We aren't launching this pledge to change behavior – people are already doing great things with technology – we are simply trying to give greater visibility to these positive acts. It is one small way to close the gap between the perception of how tech is used and the reality of how people are actually using it. It is my hope that we can use this pledge to amplify the good that’s already happening online and create a ripple effect to encourage even more acts of good.
So, help us celebrate Safer Internet Day with a simple, but powerful statement of intent. Take the pledge and let the world know you’re using your power for good. Visit, www.aplatformforgood.org/pledge.
